CITY OF YANKTON FIRE DEPARTMENT STATIONS

STATION #1

107 W. 5th Street

 

Constructed: 1976

Addition: 2004

Our main fire station is home to the majority of our apparatus.  The three city bays house the three of the five fire trucks owned and maintained by the City of Yankton.  The three-bay addition was added by the Yankton Fire Protection District, and houses five rural fire trucks and the county-owned rescue truck.  This is also the office for our full-time Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief.

AIRPORT STATION

Our airport station is a two bay garage located next to the main terminal building.  It houses one city engine and a small city-owned foam equipped quick attack truck.

LAKE STATION

S.D. Highway 52

 

Constructed: 2007

Our newest station has recently been completed and houses one rural tanker and a rural ATV brush attack unit, both owned and operated by the Yankton Fire Protection District.  It is located on the south side of Highway 52 just west of the Lewis & Clark Lake Marina entrance.

ENGINE ONE

Year: 2005

This is the newest of our city pumper trucks.  It seats six firefighters and features a headset intercom system.  This truck also has an enclosed pump panel to keep the pump operator in a controlled environment.

ENGINE TWO

Year: 1992

Engine Two is a backup city pumper, housed at Station One.  It is capable of transporting five firefighters.

ENGINE THREE

Year: 1982

The oldest city pumper truck is kept at the Chan Gurney Municipal Airport station.  It can also transport five firefighters, with three sitting in an open-air cab behind the driver.

LADDER ONE

Year: 1989

Our ladder truck has a 102' aerial platform that holds up to two firefighters.  This truck can seat seven firefighters en route to a call.

FIRE CHIEF

This four-wheel drive Dodge Durango is the fire chief's response vehicle.

DEPUTY CHIEF

The deputy fire chief's pickup is also four-wheel drive.  This vehicle transports the deputy chief directly to the scene of a call.

Year: 1992

The only rural pumper truck carries three firefighters to rural structure fires.

TANKER ONE

Year: 2006

Tanker One is a four-wheel drive truck, featuring a 1600 gallon water tank and a 3500 gallon portable drop tank.  It has three dump valves: one manual valve on each side and an electronic dump valve on the rear.  This truck also has a front bumper mounted spray nozzle that is controlled by a joystick next to the driver's seat in the cab.

TANKER TWO

Year: 1989

Tanker Two is a 1200 gallon water hauler with four-wheel drive.  It also features an electric cable winch on the front bumper.

TANKER THREE

Tanker Three has a 2000 gallon water capacity and carries a 2100 gallon portable drop tank.

TANKER FOUR

Year: 1981

This truck hauls 1200 gallons of water to rural areas where there is little or no water supply.  It has four-wheel drive to get into hard-to-reach areas, and is the only tanker positioned at our new rural fire station near Lewis & Clark Lake.

BRUSH ONE

Year: 1997

Specially designed for fighting brush fires, this truck can carry six firefighters.  On the flatbed is a 250 gallon water tank with hose reels on both sides.  We also carry a floating pump on this truck to fill tanker trucks from local water supply, if available.

BRUSH TWO

Year: 2007

This all-terrain vehicle responds from our new rural station near Lewis & Clark Lake.  It is specially designed for attacking brush fires, getting into areas where the big trucks can't go.  It has a 100 gallon water tank, LED emergency lights, and a top speed of 40 MPH.

RESCUE TWO

Year: 2005

This truck is owned by Yankton County and housed at Yankton Station One.  It is staffed by Yankton firefighters to respond to motor vehicle collisions, hazardous spills, or whenever special services are needed.  Rescue Two seats six firefighters and carries many different hydraulic extrication tools.

FIRE SAFETY TRAILER

The fire safety trailer was originally purchased through a joint effort of the Yankton and Vermillion Volunteer Fire Departments.  It teaches children how to crawl under smoke to a safe exit, using a smoke simulator.

LUVERNE

Year: 1937

This Luverne pumper was purchased new by the Yankton Fire Department in 1937.  It sat unused for years after being retired from service, and has been recently restored to look like it's original condition.
