The Yankton Volunteer Fire Department proudly serves the city of Yankton, South Dakota and surrounding area, including Lewis & Clark Lake, a reservoir on the Missouri River.  Our staff includes a full-time fire chief and deputy fire chief in addition to forty volunteer firefighters.

Station One is where the majority of our operation is located, near historic downtown and just four blocks from the river.  This station features a six-bay apparatus floor that houses two city engines, one city ladder truck, one rural engine, three rural tankers, a brush attack truck, and a county-owned HazMat / Rescue truck.  We also have a two-bay station at the municipal airport where we keep a city engine and an aviation crash truck.  A third station has been constructed approximately five miles west of Yankton near the entrance to Lewis & Clark Recreation Area, which houses one rural tanker and an ATV brush attack unit, and plans are underway for a new city station to be built by 2009.

Fire prevention and education is an important aspect of our business.  Our fire safety trailer teaches hundreds of children each year how to crawl low under smoke and find an escape.  We also give demonstrations and bring equipment to kindergarten through third grade classes in Yankton every  October during fire prevention week.  Our annual open house gives the entire community an opportunity to visit our station and get a glimpse of what we do.

NEW FIRE STATION CONCEPT

In October of 2007, the City of Yankton purchased land along the southwest corner of Douglas Avenue and 23rd Street for the construction of a second fire station in the city limits.  Concept plans for the new fire station have been drawn up by a local architect.  To see the concept, CLICK HERE.
